Borovets
Location: The oldest Bulgarian winter resort is Borovets dating back from the year of 1896 when the mayor of the town of Samokov of that time built a wooden chapel there for the sake of his wife who was ill of tuberculosis. Today Borovets is the biggest and most modern resort in Bulgaria. It is situated on the northern slopes of Mousala ridge in the eastern part of Rila. Huddled in venerable pine woods 1390 meters above sea level (with highest sky tracks at 2600 m)makes it a perfect place for relax action and recreation. The climate is also considered to be healthy. The winter in the resort is mild and of course with loads of snow! The average temperature during the coldest month January is 4.8ºC. Usually the slopes of Borovets have snow cover from mid December till April. The air in Borovets is clear, free of any pollutants. Borovets is also easily accessible- a 12 - kilometer long first class road connects it with Samokov; Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria) is just 72 kilometers away. There is a regular bus transport as to Samokov every 30 minutes.
Places of interest: The real charm of Borovets can be felt during the winter. It is only at that time when the harmony with nature is complete. The excellent equipment for ski sports attracts thousands of mountain lovers from Bulgaria and from foreign countries. They can use the 45 kilometers various in difficulty and length ski tracks grouped in three regions: Sitnqkovo – Martinovi Baraki – tracks; Markudjik- 4 pistes and Yastrebec- 3 tracks. The tracks on Yastrebets are the best- and all of the competitions in the resort are taking place there! The resort is a regular host of various winter sports competitions. It has twice hosted World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing. Its biathlon track is one of the best in Europe. Borovets was developed into a modern ski resort of high class with luxury hotels, restaurants, discos, shops and a good choice of pistes and lifts.
Borovets is a resort of Alpine type and provides very good conditions for snow sports during the winter: skiing, night- skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon, ski-doo, ice-skating in the resort, etc.
There are available ski runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers, designed with international markings and multilingual signs. Pistes are bashed and maintained to the high standard.
The ski runs of Borovets are located in three different regions. Cross-country and biathlon tracks are located 2 km away from the resort together with the cross-country tuition tracks. Borovets ski centre is serviced by well organized lift system , inclusive Gondola lift. 14 snow cannons for artificial snow are installed to guarantee the snow cover if needed. Borovets ski school has been known as one of the best in Bulgaria. There are more than 200 ski instructors fluent in foreign languages and some of them are former professional skiers. We have received hundreds of positive comments from tourists who have used their services.
Don't miss :
• 'HELI-SKI'- the resorts offers transportation to the rough ski runs by helicopter. You can ski on unprocessed terrains escorted by qualified ski instructors
• 'VIEW FLY'-Flight by helicopter above the Borovets area, so you can view & enjoy the beautiful nature of the Rila mountain
• 'HELI-TRANSPORTATION' by helicopter from Borovets to the skiing areas Yatrebets & Markudjitsi .
There are ski and snowboard rental services around the Gondola lift station, but we strongly recommend you to book your holiday with us and take advantage of our low prices compared to those on spot in the resort. Mountain rescue service is available 24 hours and it is located at a 3 minutes – walk from the lower cabin cableway.
The new lifts changed the outlook of the resort. The total capacity of all of the equipments is now 14 200 people, per hour which means that this is the number of skiers that can ski at the same time. Three individual zones are being differentiated in Borovets with over 40 kilometers total length of the tracks. This makes it possible for the tourists to use the most appropriate tracks according to the weather conditions. Even if the wind is strong, when the cabin lift doesn’t work, the skier can use the lower parts of the tracks in front of Rila hotel. There are 4 ski drugs with 1200 persons per hour capacity. There are 2 more lifts. The pistes are lighted and equipped with snow cannons for artificial snow. Night skiing will be allowed till 10.00 pm.
The pistes on the higher parts of Markudjitsite are for experts. During the summer Yastrebets piste will be protected against erosion by nets. There is also a new project for the wire lift in the region of Markudjitsite. The old drug lifts there will be replaced by a four seat wire line. Snow cannons will blow artificial snow in Borovets during the winter, the two pistes in front of hotel Rila. This will make it possible for the skiers to ski from December untill April.
Medical & dental service
The Emergency ski patrol service is available 24 hours a day. Ambulance and clinic (with doctor and nurses) are available, as well as first aid serving all ski slopes. Fully equipped and functioning hospital is available in Samokov. Highly qualified dentists are available at the resort too.
Surrounding areas: We would certainly recommend the world famous Rila Monastery or the busy city of Sofia for sightseeing or shopping. You can also visit the palace "Carska Bistrica" which is just 10 miniutes walk from the new center of the resort.
Rila Monastery is the largest monastery complex in Bulgaria. It is situated deep in the heart of Rila mountain. It is a national historical reserve, it is in UNESCO world natural and cultural heritage list, is a recipient of the Golden Apple Award of F.I.J.E.T., and a fascinating local and international tourist site. St Ivan Rilski or his disciples founded it in the 10th century. The existing buildings date from the 14th century, when the Hrelio Tower was erected (1335). It took 30 years to build the current monastery. After several plunderings and burnings, the monastery was restored in the 19th century. Many famous builders of that time contributed to the restoration - Master Pavel Ivanovich, Alexii Riletz, and master Milenko The rich wall paintings are the work of iconographers from the Samokov and Bansko art schools - Zahari Zograph, St. Dospevski, T. Vishanov, and Molerov.
The woodcarvings are representative of the typical renaissance rich relief ornaments in the Mount Athos style. Throughout the centuries, the monastery has been one of the most important cultural, scholarly and writing centers, and the home of many famous clerics.
In the 15th century, it was a literary center. Although it has been repeatedly plundered, it has a book collection numbering more than 32,000 volumes, including 9000 old typographic copies, 250 manuscripts from the 11th - 19th centuries, and some 100 annotation manuscripts. A museum has been a newly built eastern wing of the monastery building which houses the gate of the Hrelyo Church. Ornaments, ancient coins, and church plates are exhibited here. There is a entire hall of dedicated to a collection of icons brought as a presents from all over the country. The wooden cross on which monk Rafael worked for 12 years (from 1790 to1802) finally growing blind from this amazing work leaving for us a unique piece of art, is exceptional.
It is possible to get to the Monastery along a first- class asphalt road. There is a regular bus transport connection to the town: of Rila (19km.), Blagoevgrad(40km.), Dupnitsa(44km.) and Sofia(110km.).A tourist town has sprung the Monastery , offering accommodation to the numerous visitors and admires.
If you have decided to spend the night here, you have a choice: it is most romantic to do this in the Monastery itself and cheapest to do this a with only basic conveniences, in the tourist hotel (in seven- , nine- and twenty-bed rooms). After about 30-40 min walk eastwards the marked route one can visit the retreat and the grave of Sveti Ivan Rilski, together with a chapel nearby.
There is a belief that the one who succeeds passing the hole of the cave, where he had retreated as a hermit, without leaning on or touching the rocks is considered pious…
The Rila monastery is a point from which one can set out on several marked hiking routes around Rila Mountain. To Ribni ezera (Fish lakes) Chapel, through the above mentioned Kiril Meadow (4 to 5-hour walk) to Makedonia Chalet (a 5-hour walk), to Ivan Vazov Chanel(a 5-hour walk), to 7 Rila Lakes Chalet(6to 7- hour walk, )to the peak and to the chalet Malyovitsa(6 to 7-hour walk).
Accommodation and Catering: Samokov Hotel is the most luxurious-4 stars. The 3- stars hotels are the most in number, the biggest of them being Rila hotel with 2000 beds. Olymp hotel is of medium size (308beds), the same goes for Yastrebets hotel (opposite Yastrebets 3 ski-run).The following hotels are small but cosy: Breza hotel, Moura hotel, Flora hotel.
The older but renovated are as follows: Bor hotel, Edelvays hotel, Sokolovets hotel, which also offer superb accommodation. The little houses Yagoda and Malina host 4 people. Accommodation is on offer for tourists with more limited financial capacities, too: Fournir Villa and the tourist chalet of Shoumnatitsa. No doubt that there are a lot of hotels, private villas, holiday homes, where one can get accommodation. In summer their number is reduced. There are a lot of public catering establishments, which offer various meals from the Bulgarian cuisine. Borovets is full of bars, cafes, night clubs, and discos. The night life is excellent at this resort (Buzz bar, Mamacitas, Bonkers disco, etc). This resort is known as the most interesting ski centre as goes for party time. It has been catering for foreign tourists for many years now, the staffs are known to be friendly and professional. Most of the places work till the early morning, and offer good prices and special 'happy hour' discounts. Music played is mostly international dance music. Very often special shows are presented in clubs. There are available restaurants and taverns with Bulgarian national folk music and 'horo' dancing, which some people find very interesting.
